[Yes, Devon is still moping and depressed about what happened two months ago when his magic basically got hijacked and ended up freezing everyone.  His magic has never run wild like that before, and even though it wasn't truly his magic he still feels at fault.]

How do you forgive yourself for doing something... bad?  Even when you didn't mean for it to end up bad.  In fact, it may not have even been totally your fault, but the hurt was still possible because of something you did.

[Does that even make sense?  He hopes it does.]

I would say apologizing and getting a thorough scolding is the best way to set my heart at ease in that kind of situation. If possible, I'll find a way to atone for it too.

A large group just means you have to apologize to more people, but if you don't actually know who all of them are, that does make it a little more complicated... I think if it was me, I would just try to be really loud.

[ If it isn't clear already, Kyoko is not actually qualified to give advice on forgiveness. ]

... Was it that bad? Are you-- [ Her voice drops into a sort of stage whisper. ] Are you in hiding now? On the lam?

The lam! Without a B! It means you're on the run from the law!! How long do you think they'll lock you up for your crimes?

So... it's not something you're worried about going to jail for? Which means it wasn't anything illegal? Not theft or assault or that kind of thing?

Are you... worried about some kind of social blunder, then?

[ Unasked: How did he pull off something like that on a mass scale without people knowing it was him?? ]

[He doesn't often check the network, much less respond, but...]

If you want to forgive yourself, you could start by seeking forgiveness from those you feel that you've wronged, if possible. But if you don't feel that you deserve to be forgiven, then there's no forgiving yourself.

And? I don't know what you did, but if it that sounds too difficult for you, then you may as well give up now.

I understand that much... which is why it's up to you if you think seeking out everyone affected to ask their forgiveness is worth it, or if you deserve their forgiveness at all.

But if you're simply looking for a way to shed your guilt without facing the consequences of your actions, then I have no advice for you.

...A public declaration would be possible in a world with technology like this, I suppose. It was something that occurred in this world, then?

I think it depends on whether the act was forgivable. Making a simple mistake is different than murder. Just for example.

[An example he's definitely not living with no sir.]

[Look, dude, you brought up guilt in a vague way on the multiverse internet. He decides not to clarify anything about unintentional murder.]

Then, I guess, talking to the ones you hurt and not doing it again? That's usually the standard method.

[personal profile] ghoulserrand 2022-03-22 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
... I think maybe you should work on figuring that out before feeling guilty. If you don't even know if you did it, you can't say it's your fault.

That leaves a lot of room for tangential blaming. What exactly did you do?
